A seed bank is an institution that houses a collection of seeds for preservation and research. The location of this specific site in Millennium Park, Chicago, IL invites the public into the seed research and cyclical harvesting process. Seed, scientist and public space are crossed to facilitate interaction. Botanists activate the process of rough sorting, microscopic sorting, packing, storing, and seed germination as visitors pass through. The Millennium Seed Bank encourages a reciprocal relationship with plants in the heart of the Windy City.
Facade treatment is inspired by Josef Albers’ Study for Fenced with his line weights transposed as concrete, steel and glass. It slopes to carefully access light or darkness in relation to private and public programming.
